In other words, it is important to ensure the quality of welding before, during, and after the process. This is where the welding certificate comes into play. What is the Welding Certificate?

Both welding protocols and activities should be documented at both the company and individual levels. If agreements regarding quality assurance have been made, it is usually mandatory to demonstrate that the welders are certified. The welding certificate proves that the welder is competent to perform certain welding tasks in a high-quality manner. Additionally, the welding method itself can also be qualified through a company qualification.

There is not just one welding certificate. Both welding methods and welders are certified and qualified in various ways. Here is an overview of the most common welding certificates in Europe:

How is the Welding Certificate Obtained?

Under the supervision of a professional, specially designed test pieces are welded. The supervisor verifies all essential variables and records them where necessary. Depending on the desired welding certificate, either a Limited Certificate (LK) or a Full Certificate (LMK), certain examinations are conducted. Broadly, these examinations can be divided into Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Destructive Testing. NDT may include visual, magnetic, ultrasonic, or radiographic testing, while destructive testing may involve tensile tests, bend tests, hardness measurements, notch toughness tests, and macroscopic examinations. When the execution and all results are acceptable, a certificate can be issued.

The Certificate is Obtained: What’s Next?

If the results are positive, the welder receives the welding certificate in their name. Please note that unlike the welding procedure qualification, the certificate is not valid indefinitely. Welders must demonstrate every six months that they can still weld at the indicated level. Once this is demonstrated, the associated extension list is stamped, and the validity of the certificate is extended by six months.
